This study establishes the relevance of the liturgical perspectives of the Canadian theologian David R. Newman (1938-1990). We focus on the book Worship as Praise and Empowerment whish the author published in 1988, two years before his death. We start with the context and the purpose of the book. Then, we report on how David Newman conceives the archeology of the liturgical question, in connection with his perception of the rebirth of liturgical language. Metaphor is the central category mobilized by the author from an analytical and hermeneutical point of view. For this reason, we also draw up the state of the question, presenting the development of research on rites as “embodied metaphors”.
