The aim of this study is to document the history of the Roman Latin anaphoric tradition on the basis of the scarce but valuable evidences that has come down to us since the Late Antiquity, starting with the evolutional history of the term praedicatio, the traces of a Greek anaphora (of Antiochian origin) used in Rome (as recorded in the Adversus Arium of Victorinus) and the possible presence of some parts of the canon actionis in the De sacramentis. In addition to these documents, information on the orations and preface in the Roman tradition («cum canone») in the Missale Gothicum, the Missale Bobien­se, the Stowe Missal and the numerous early medieval sacramentaries will be reviewed through a close and direct comparison of the sources. The parallels between the Hanc igitur of the Stowe Missal and the Anaphora of St. Basil will appear to be unique, since no other early medieval witness of the canon actionis, on the basis of what has been reconstructed, seems to refer to the Antiochian anaphoric tradition.
