Continuity and Discontinuity in Local Liturgical Customs

Abstract

This study examines the principles which governed the differentiation of liturgical practice in the Middle Ages. An evaluation is given of the reliability of material sources of the medieval or early modern period as an indication of what obtained in earlier times. According to a methodology consisting in the selection of relevant sources and aspects of analysis, an attempt is made to cast light on the changes in the paradigms of ecclesiastical identity which came about in the medieval world.
