Abstract

The post‑Vatican II liturgical reform represents a complex historical process deeply shaped by the 1950s Liturgical Movement and its ongoing influence on contemporary liturgy. This study aims to investigate the evolution of theological ideas and ritual practices from Mediator Dei (1947) to the Consilium’s instruction Inter Oecumenici (1964), with a focus on the role of the Second Vatican Council. To achieve this, the study proposes a methodological approach centered on the ambo as the “table of the Word of God”, serving as a case study. The reevaluation of Sacred Scripture, alongside the restoration of the lectionary and liturgy of the Word in the 1950s, played a significant role in shaping discussions among the Council Fathers and Consilium’s consultants. Despite initial reservations, Inter Oecumenici underscored the importance of establishing a visible space in the church‑building for the liturgy of the Word, marking a significant milestone in affirming the ambo’s renewed identity within the liturgical space.
