Abstract

In the Coptic Orthodox Paschal rite, a particular praise is sung twelve times between the prophetic readings and the Gospel: this is the doxology Thok te tigom, which has become the subject of controversy due to the translation of the last passage, derived from Ps 117, 13 and Ex 15, 2. The paper aims to refute the points made in a short article published by Mariam Abdelmalak and Michael Y. Henein through a meticulous grammatical analysis, and to trace its biblical references through a comparison between the Greek and Coptic texts. The conclusion of this investigation leads to a new translation of the passage on the basis of its profound theological relevance (traceable, moreover, to a Christological exomologesis), emphasising the full adherence of this doxology to the standard text of the Coptic Bible, which must therefore maintain its pre‑eminence over the Arabic liturgical texts.
