«Christ, the firstborn of all creation» is an expression exclusive to Col 1:15, indicating Christ’s pre‑eminence over all created realities, which owe their very existence to the creative action of the Father mediated exclusively through Christ. The expression can be understood on the basis of Christ’s exclusive mediation in redemption, which reveals how the fullness of divinity dwells in him. And since Christ is the bearer of divine fullness, it necessarily follows that all divine revelation is Christologically marked. This includes its first act, which is creation. The letter develops these concepts in response to attempts to trace angelic mediations present in the community. At the same time, it asserts an original and continuous relationship between God and Christ with regard to the whole of creation. Those who benefit from redemption are thus placed in a “common home” towards which they are bound to act responsibly.
