The « Blessing of the people » in the Missale Gothicum
Abstract
This study considers one unique element in the Missale Gothicum of the 7th century: the “Blessing of the People” (Benedictio Populi). A careful textual analysis of the fifteen given blessings uncovers their purpose, structure, theological content and uniquely limited liturgical use. The results of the study underscore the inherent differences and similarities between the Gallican liturgy and the Solemn Blessings of the 21st century Roman Rite.
